Many dog owners at one time or another become frustrated with their dog due to its behavior. There may be many reasons for this. It could be that the dog is destroying things through constant scratching and gnawing,  or that it is going to the toilet in the house. It may be that it is violent, or threatening, to other dogs and pets or to humans In any case where a dog’s behavior is giving you reason for concern, you should always be ready to intercede and find a way to stop the behavior becoming a long-term problem.

Problem behavior in dogs is something that can make an owner feel very pressured.   We all love our pets, and when they misbehave all that we want is for them to understand that it upsets us. We really would prefer that they would behave themselves all the time, but if they are going to step over the line occasionally we would at least hope that they desist the first time we request it. If they continue it, this is when it becomes “problem behavior”. This is something that we all want to avoid.

If problem behavior becomes a major issue for you with your pet, you should sit down and consider why it is happening.  Is your dog getting the right amount and kind of exercise?  Does it get enough human interaction? Is there something in its diet which might be causing it to behave in a strange way?  All of these issues need to be considered, as that allows us to address problem behavior. This is a common question that most first-time Dog owners ask me. Before I answer your question, let me ask you a few instead:

• Do you use cookies, collars, head halters or clickers to make your Dog listen to your commands?

Get Your Dog To Listen To You

Before you begin any training, you must first establish yourself as the “ALPHA dog” of your family. Your Dog must know that you’re the leader of the pack and it is YOU who is in charge.

Here is a list of simple DO’s and DONT’s that you must follow if you want to be the Alpha:

• Always go out or come in through the door first – remember you are the leader;

• Always eat first – give your Dog something to eat only after you’ve finished your meal;

• Don’t circle around your Dog when he is lying on the floor – make your Dog move out of your way instead;

• Don’t let your Dog set the rules – pay attention to him when you think fit and not whenever he demands;

• Don’t permit your Dog to sleep with you in your bed – demarcate his sleeping area clearly.

Once you successfully established yourself as the Alpha, training your Dog and making him listen will be a lot easier than you can imagine. Remember, if your Dog does not learn to “listen”, all your training efforts will be in vain!

Does your Dog know his name?
 Does your Dog look at you whenever you call him by his name? This is the first and the most critical step involved in Dog Training. If your Dog doesn’t respond to his name, you cannot have his attention for teaching him any other commands.

To make sure that your Dog recognizes his name, take a treat in your hand and hold it away from your body. Call your Dog’s name. He is most likely to look at the treat in your hand. Continue calling his name untill he turns and looks at your eyes. Give him the treat immediately. Repeat this exercise by holding the treat in the other hand. Once you’re sure that your Dog has learnt to recognize his name, just call his name and reward him for looking at you by petting or with a hug.

You must understand that Dogs respond far better to positive reinforcement than they do to coercion or force.

How To Potty Train A Puppy

When picking up your new puppy one of the first thoughts you should have is how to train them.  One of our goals with our new puppy is to of course have a well trained an well behaved puppy..  One of the key training points you need to take into consideration is potty training, and it is not as difficult as it seems.  Follow along as we plan to help you understand some tips and techniques you can use to help make this a simple process.

It is important that you take the responsibility to train your dog.  If you are not ready yourself to train your puppy it is not fair to them.  They want to be trained and are at the perfect stage of their life to accept the training you will provide them.  By being dedicated to your training you will have much higher odds of success in training your puppy, so be sure to stick with it.  Don’t overthink the process of training your puppy because it is not as difficult as you may believe it is.

Exactly how old is your puppy?  This does make a difference in the training process of your puppy.  You should start focusing on your training once your puppy is two months or older as you will have a much better chance of successful potty training.  While you puppy is under two months old they still do not have any form of proper bladder control and trying to house train them at this age is a very difficult task.

Make sure you have dedicated the necessary time to properly potty training your puppy.  This training will generally only take a few weeks to accomplish but you must remain consistent with it.  By following a proper schedule on when to take your puppy out you will have a much better success rate when training them.

You must have patience when training your puppy to use the potty properly.  If you find that you are one that does not have patience you are much better off having another person train your puppy.  It is important that you understand your puppy will still have accidents when you are training them.  Obviously this will test your patience but keep in mind your puppy is at a stage of learning right now and they will quickly adapt to this method of training.  Obviously, before you start house training your puppy you will want to learn how to properly do it with a high success rate.  Make sure you brush up on your skills and dedicate the proper amount of time to training your puppy.

• Be sure to take your puppy out when they first get up.

• Finally they should be taken outside prior to bedtime
