Training the dog to obey the heel command

The heel command is one of the first basic obedience commands a pet dog should learn. A dog has to learn to obey the heel command as it ensures not only its own safety but the safety of the pet owner as well. Of course a dog owner would be proud to have a well trained pet that obeys the heel command. People keep dogs for protection as a big dog walking beside an elderly person would make wrongdoers think twice to carry out their evil intentions.

How would you go about training the dog to heel? Contrary to what other dog owners think, training the dog to heel would not be a very tedious task. Positive reinforcement will make a dog learn to obey the heel command easily because these are intelligent animals. Dogs would easily adapt to training as apart from being intelligent, man’s best friends have the innate eagerness to please. So instead of reprimands and harshly pulling on the leash, the dog will be enticed to respond to training by giving the pet a lot of praises and using the dog’s favorite treat as positive reinforcement.

The objective of this particular obedience training is to teach the dog to stay by the master’s side whether walking or running. Fasten a leash to the dog’s collar. You can position the dog to your left or right side but this heel position must be consistently used so that the dog will not be confused. One hand has to hold the leash and the other has to have the treat.

Get the dog’s attention by letting him smell the treat in your hand. Move forward while continuing to hold the treat at the dog’s eye level. Instead of moving forward, the dog may move across your body to get the treat in your hand. Give the leash a quick tug and say NO in an authoritative voice. Let the dog assume the heel position again and continue walking. Give the heel command and continue walking. If the dog behaves and continues to walk beside you, reward the dog with a treat. This process must be repeated over and over again but be sure to make the training sessions short.

Walking the dog can be a stressful task for owners of dogs that pull on the leash so that it would appear as if the owner is being walked by the pet. This stressful situation can be prevented if only the dog owner has taken the time to train the dog to obey the heel command.

There’s a vast neighborhood hearing the excessive barking of your dog and they are all sleeping at the middle of the night. Some really do inhumane plans to stop their neighbor’s dog from irritating barking. There was a time I had a neighbor next door who thought of putting too much mono-sodium glutamate on the food my other neighbor’s puppy believing it would mercifully kill the dog (lucky for the puppy he’s nonetheless alive)! To put down the dogs who bark unwarrantably is brutal and unacceptable. I wish to share the ideas on how to handle dog’s abnormal barking. Here they may be.The Do’s Show your canine how you can behave. In no way ever yell instead you should use gestures and different vocal intonations.Another excellent way of preventing abnormal barking is by spending top quality time with your puppy. You can watch a movie with him. Some ways of doing this is by buying him a chew bone. If he has something to play with, he will not bark excessively.Barking can be associated with rewards. The puppy barks to obtain its owner’s interest, the proprietor comes to the canine to tell it to be quiet, perhaps petting it or playing with it, and goes away once more. The puppy is quiet whilst the proprietor is there, but has learned that barking will bring the operator back. Thus the method of barking and reward is established.Oftentimes a dog barks when they feel they are not noticed. Older Dog Training

When we talk about worms in dogs we are using a term to describe several internal parasitic infections that our pets are prone to. Owners can buy treatments for worms in dogs from pet shops and veterinary practices and should use them regularly. Worming is a vital part of responsible dog care.

There are two common types of worms in dogs in the UK. They are called roundworms and tapeworms. Unfortunately, roundworms are very hard to avoid as many puppies are infected at birth. This underlines the importance of worming our dogs regularly, especially during puppyhood.

As worms in dogs go, roundworms can have serious consequences, despite the fact that many dogs which are infested will show no outward symptoms. Adult roundworms live in the dog’s intestine and eats the contents. This effectively means that the roundworms eat your dog’s food! In cases of serious infection there can be dozens of roundworms living inside one dog. It isn’t surprising to find a heavily infested dog can be malnourished, lacking in energy and displaying a dull coat.

Inside adult dogs, roundworms may remain dormant in cysts inside the muscles. In times of stress they awaken. Often, pregnancy reawakens the larvae and they migrate around the body and infect the unborn puppies. Treatment for worms in dogs administered to the pregnant bitch cannot rid the unborn puppies of their worms. This is why worms in dogs are such a big problem to new born puppies.

Adult worms release eggs which are passed with the dog’s faeces, contaminating soil. Then toehr dogs pick up the eggs from the soil. However, the most common roundworm in the UK, the Toxocara Canis can also infect children when they touch contaminated soil or sand pits. The worm larvae may then migrate around the child’s body and can cause serious and permanent damage to eyesight if they reach the back of teh retina. It is therefore very important to regularly treat worms in dogs.
