Boxer Dog Training Facts
If you are a boxer dog owner who wants an obedient and healthy pet (who wouldn’t want that anyway?), there’s no better way to achieve it than through effective boxer dog training. This training enables a dog to learn various commands he needed to become a well-mannered pet everyone loves to be around.
Beliefs about training and this breed’s intelligence in general vary from one person to another. One expert says that boxer dogs have average working/obedience intelligence while many boxer lovers believe that this breed’s intelligence and working ability is far above average and they would certainly do well when handled by the right person using the right training strategy.
Whether you are a dog expert or not, you can be the right person to provide boxer dog training so long as you are aware of this information:
- The boxer breed is said to be stubborn that’s why training them can be difficult. Whether you find it true or not, one way to remedy this problem should you find it true is through correct obedience training. Teaching him how to respond to important commands like come, stay, sit and down is one of the steps towards successful training.
- The boxer is a strong breed but they hardly ever become aggressive. However, proper socialization is necessary to hinder aggression along with other behavior issues like chasing (ducks, chickens and other farm birds), jumping, barking and dominance.
- A boxer needs confident and dominant owner because without it, he’s more likely to take over the pack leader position that can further bring about more behavior problems. Set rules and restrictions and be sure to implement them strictly. If you do not wish him to dominate the living room couch, remain consistent with it. Giving in because he appears cute with his pleading eyes or pitiful whimper must be avoided for it can only confuse him of what is allowed and not allowed.
- Gastric dilation volvulus (GDV), commonly known as, bloat, torsion or gastric torsion, can be seen in this breed. Hence it is important to avoid exercise and various boxer dog training activities right before and after meals. Meals should also be provided in smaller amounts multiple times each day as opposed to one big meal.
- Boxers can’t tolerate high heat or humidity, same with other breed of dogs with brachycephalic head. It is just wise to put aside activities during these conditions.
