It is not surprising for dogs to be viewed as man’s best friends because these animals have proven their worth as affectionate, loyal and protective companions that have also provided the family with an unending source of joy. Giving the dog a massage is one of the ways by which an owner can repay the pet for all the wonderful things it has given. All dogs would love to receive attention from their owners. Similar to the effects of massage to humans, dogs would get loads of benefits from massage too.

Dog massage has therapeutic benefits that can help a pet with a medical condition. This kind of deep massage though is best conducted by well trained massage therapist using a variety of techniques. Nonetheless a short daily massage session can improve the flexibility and reduce joint and muscle pains associated with aging.

Massage relaxes the muscles and consequently relieves physical and emotional stress. Massage has a calming effect that allows a dog to get through the sounds of thunder or the deafening noise of the 4th of July or New Year festivities. Massaging is quality time that will enhance the bond between owner and pet.

A pet owner should not be daunted with the task of massaging the pet as it can be learned . Bear in mind that the goal of the massage is to give the pet relaxation thus a pet that is not comfortable with being touched must not be forced. Dogs adopted from animals are kind of aloof and refuse to be touched as they are either abandoned or abused. Small pets can be massaged while lying in your lap. Bigger dogs though would need a firm surface like a padded table, a couch or a cushioned floor. Give the dog soft slow strokes from the head to the tail. With light pressure, scratch behind the dog’s ears, rub the chin and cheeks taking extra care to rub the area between the eyes.

Make circular motions with the heel of the hand to massage large dogs. With the same circular motion but with a little more pressure, move the heel of the hand to the shoulders and chest of the dog. In smaller dogs, use three fingers and follow the same path. The stroking must follow the direction of hair growth. The inner side of the legs can be stroked against the direction of hair growth.
